Gallop's 2016 State of the American Workplace Study indicated only 33% of almost 200 million respondents were engaged at work.
Why is this important?
Disengaged workers had 37% higher absenteeism, 49% more accidents, 60% more errors, 18% lower productivity, and companies with lower engagement scores had 65% lower share prices over time.
The same study found that 72% of an employee's engagement could be enhanced by witnessing their supervisor's leadership skills.
Gallop's 2015 State of the American Manager Study indicates 1 in 10 people are naturally suited to management roles, and only 3 in 10 are moderately suited.
Why is this important?
Gallop reports that managers with leadership skills have the ability to influence over 70% of employee engagement. They also found the top reason for leaving a job was to "get away from their manager" at some point in their career.
The loss in productivity due to knowledge bleed and disruption to the organization is unfortunate, as is the 20-213% of their salary cost to replace that individual according to Psychometrics Canada.
